AMBER is located at a distance of 11 km from Jaipur. It was the seat of power of the Kachhwala clan of Amber. It used to be their capital, until it was moves to Jaipur.

Style: The construction of the Amber Fort began in the year 1592.Man Singh I started it,but his descendant Jai Singh I completed its construction. The exterior of the fort is not in the least like its interiors. The outside is very imposing and rigging looking whereas the inside is a comforting and warm interior .This interior is influenced by both Hindu and Muslim style of ornamentation .on the walls, paintings depict various hunting scenes. There is also a lot artistic work on the walls. These are covered with intricate carvings; mosaic and minute mirror-work that make the halls look very majestic and imperial.Amber was founded by the Meenas and was a flourishing settlement as far back as in 967 AD. Around 1037 AD,the Kachhwaha clan of Rajputs, who ruled it until it was deserted , conquered it.only the Bengali Brahmans of the Shila Devi temple and the gatekeepers remained behind it the entire supplanted by the modern city of Jaipur. It is only 8km from there. The picturesque situation of Amber has attracted the admiration of all travelers. It is situated at the mouth of a rocky mountain gorge in which nestles a lovely lake.It is seen to be a remarkable example of combined Rajput-Mughal architecture.Raja Kakil Dev began on the old palace, when Amber became his capital in 1036,although much modification was added during the reign of Raja Maan Singh I in the 1660s. Among the chief building, the Diwan-i-Khas and the elaborately painted Ganesh Poll built by the Mirza Raja Jai Singh I.

Legend: "Sooner had Mirza completed the Diwan-i-Khaas" it is related "than it came to the ears of the emperor Jahangir that his vassal had surpassed him in magnificence, that this last great work quite eclipsed all the marvels of the imperial city ;the columns of red sandstone having been particularly noticed as sculptured with exquisite taste and elaborate detail. In a fit of jealousy, the emperor commanded that this masterpiece should be thrown, and sent commissioners to Amber charged with the execution of this order.

of this order.Mirza,in order to save the structure, had the columns plastered over with stucco,so that the messengers from Agra would have to acknowledge to the emperor that the magnificence, which had been so much talked of,was after all pure invention.Since then his apathetic successors have neglected to bring to light this splendid work;it is only by knowing off some of the plaster that one get a glimpse of the sculptures, which are perfect as on the day they were carved."The fort is built with white marble and red sandstone .It looks even more attractive because of the Maota lake in the foreground. The fort in itself is a remarkable sight. As one looks on the fort with clear reflection on the lake in the front, one cannot help but wonder if it is a dream or a beautiful illusion.
