Assam is eminent in silk production. Assam Silk is famous around the globe and it signifies 3 chief different types of home-grown feral silk formed in Assam. These are: golden Muga, white Pat and warm Eri silk. It is one of the major cottage industries in Assam which is centered at Sualkuchi. Muga silk is famous for its glossy quality and permanence. Attributable to its squat porosity the Muga yarn cannot be bleached or dyed and its natural golden color is maintained. This silk can be hand-washed with its gleam mounting after every wash. Very frequently the silk survive its possessor. Pat silk is produced by silkworms which nourishes on mulberry leaves. It is generally of gleaming white or off-white in color. Its cloth can arid in shade. Eri silk is made by Samia cynthia ricini which nourishes on leaves of Castor oil plant . It is also well-known as Endi or Errandi silk. Since the developing procedure of Eri lets the pupae to grow into adults and only the open ended cocoons are used for spinning into silk, it is also widely recognized as passive silk.
