India is a land of diversified culture and traditions and similarly, the wedding rituals as well of every state differ. The wedding ritual of Assam which is in North-East India also differs from the rest of India. Assamese wedding like other Indian wedding is divided into three parts. The pre-wedding celebration which includes Juroon , where the grooms mother along with their relatives visits the brides house and greets the bride with gifts which include traditional assamese attire to be worn during the other rituals, ornaments, fish, sweets etc. The groom’s mother gives sindoor, which is the mark of being married to the bride during this ceremony. The other pre-wedding ceremonies are naprukhor sharadha, pani tola and haldhi. The next part is the wedding where the couple ties the nuptial knot infront of the holy fire. The wedding rituals include akhyo tola and kanyadan. The last part is the post-wedding ceremonies that include Bidai, ghor gosoka, khubakhubuni, bor koina patot diya and aath magala.

Assamese marriages are great to witness as they have an altogether different way of celebrating. It is a generally a 3-4 days long affair and the wedding reception is held either prior to the wedding or on the wedding day or the next day.
