The consumer protection act was first passed on 24th december 1986 in the Parliament signed by President of India. The act empowers consumers across the nation except the Jammu and Kashmir province. To carry out it's proper functioning following bodies have been set up:

Consumer Protection Councils
Consumer Disputes Redressal Agencies
District consumer Disputes Redressal Forum
State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission
National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission

The Consumer Protection Laws protects the consumers from the manufacturer and the seller from being cheated. These laws help provides the right to the consumer to raise their voice against any fraud. Although the Consumer Protection Laws was enacted in 1986, even in 2012 people are not aware of their rights. Consumers should be made aware of their rights through media and other such means.
