Guru Hargobind Singh Jayanti is a Sikh festival that is celebrated to commemorate the birth of the 6th Guru of the Sikh. His birth anniversary is celebrated by the Sikh community with great enthusiasm all over the World.

About Guru Hargobind Singh
Guru Hargobind Singh became a Guru by succeeding his father Guru Arjan Dev on the 25th of May 1606. He became a Guru when he was barely 11 years old when his father the 5th Sikh Guru was put to death. Owing to his expertise in martial art he was considered as one of the greatest enemies of the Mughal Emperor. He was well known for keeping two swords, wherein one represented his spiritual authority and the other represented temporal as well as political headship. Soon after he became the religious leader of the Sikhs, in front of the temple at Amritsar, he built another one and named it as Akal Takht, which means throne of the God. With his intelligence, he surpassed in the political matters. He started training some of his followers in martial arts as well as in using arms and very soon, his army grew and he owned seven hundred horses. Apart from forming his own army, he also included about 500 men from the Majha area of the Punjab in the infantry. He also built a fortress in the city of Amritsar and named it Lohgarh.

He was a great leader, who not only protected his own community but also supported the backward people of the Hindu community and the other oppressed people of Punjab and offered them leadership along with protection. For this cause, he fought 6 battles with the Mughal emperor and thus became their biggest enemy. He was the pioneer of socio-political deliberation in the nation and was also a great reformer, who tried to formulated and execute new thesis in the society, bringing about reformation. His contribution towards the Sikh religion as well as towards the whole nation is remarkable. In the year 1644 on 19th March, he died nominating his grandson Guru Har Rai as the next Guru.

On this day, people visit the Golden temple at Amritsar and take a plunge into the lake surrounding the most honored Golden Temple. According to the Sikh, the water of this lake is equivalent to nectar or amrit. Thus, they take a dip in this sacred water to wash off all their impurities before going inside the temple.
