Guru Purnima is a traditional festival of Hindus as well as Buddhists, which is celebrated to show gratitude to the teachers. It is celebrated on the full moon day in the month of Ashadh of the Hindu calendar to pay respect to the first Hindu Guru Ved Vyasa.

About Guru Purnima
Guru Purnima is considered to be an auspicious occasion for the Hindus as well as the Buddhist and is celebrated with fervour and enthusiasm. It is a sacred day that is celebrated to honour Ved Vyasa the first Guru or the teacher of Hindu Dharma, who not only classified the Vedas but also was the writer of 18 Puranas and the great Indian epic Mahabharata. This day is also known as Vyasa Purnima. This day marks the significance and importance of a teacher (Guru) in the life of a person. Guru is one who takes you out from the darkness of ignorance. However, in every person’s life, a Guru or a teacher plays an important role, who removes the darkness of ignorance from our lives as well as shows the path of realization. On this auspicious day, the disciples worship their respective Gurus and pay tribute to them. This is a traditional Hindu festival that has been celebrated since ages to offer gratitude to the teachers for removing ignorance from the lives of people.

Significance of Guru Purnima
The festival of Guru Purnima Vyasa Purnima is celebrated all over the nation to offer gratitude to the teachers. On this day, all spiritual contender and devotees worship Vyasa in honor of his great personality and all disciples carry out a 'puja' of their respective spiritual teachers. This day is also auspicious and significant for the farmers, as it is considered as the precursor of rain. It is a good time to begin your spiritual lessons. The period 'Chaturmas' ("four months") begins from this day. In the past, nomadic spiritual teachers and their disciples used to snuggle down at a place to study and discourse on the Brahma Sutras composed by Vyasa, and engage themselves in Vedantic discussions. Therefore on the day of Guru Purnima, disciples introspect, and worship the Guru. Celebration of this day has kept the old traditions of the age old rich Indian culture alive.
