Hajo is an ancient town of Assam and is a major pilgrimage destination for Hindus, Muslims and Buddhists. The town has a rich historical background as it was the capital of the Koch dynasty of Assam, which was taken over by the Mughal Dynasty and ruled the town for about 19 years. The town of Hajo is situated along the bank of River Brahmaputra and house several ancient temples, which attracts a lot of devotees from all over. Hayagriba Madhava Temple is one of the most popular temples of the town, which is of immense religious importance for both Hindus and Buddhists. The place is also considered as second Mecca as it houses a Mosque named as Poa Mecca. It is believed by the Muslims that those who cannot afford to go to Mecca, should visit Pao Mecca four times to complete their Haj. This makes this place an important pilgrimage destination for the Muslims. Apart from these, there are temples of various Hindu deities which include Ganesh Temple, Kedareswar Temple, Kamesware Temple, Joy Durga Temple and Dhoparguri Satra, attracts the devotees.
