Commonwealth games is a highly prestigious sports event . CWG happens to be one of the most prestigious sports events across the globe and thanks to internet and other added factors, its clout is increasing with the passing of years. Before we proceed any more, we must get acquainted with the basics of this sports event. Commonwealth Games, to put it briefly, happens to be a multinational, multi-sport event and does depict competitions that do entail hundreds of thousands of selected athletes from members of the Commonwealth of Nations. The next Commonwealth Games will be held in 2010 in Delhi, India.

CWG baton generates no interest in Kashmir

AS IT is known that the CWG 2010 are to be conducted in Delhi in the month of October. In this regard the Queen's Baton Relay for the CWG 2010 reached Srinagar. The Queen's Baton was taken to the famous Nishat Gardens where sports persons of the Kashmir valley were present.

Covering more than one lakh seventy thousand Kilometers and seventy nations and starting the Hundred Days countdown to 2010 CWG, the Queen's Baton Relay arrived in India from Pakistan through the historic Amritsar Wagah Border on Friday, 25th of June 2010 and would now travel all States of India before reaching National capital Delhi.

1st CWG were held in Hamilton, Canada in 1930.Total of 11 countries accumulating 400 athletes participated in 1930 Commonwealth Games.

Since First CWG of 1930 the games have been taking place once in every 4 years except 1942 and 1946 due to the World War II. Out of the Sixteen games that have been played so far, 4 of them have been hosted by Australia ( CWG Sydney 1938, CWG Perth 1962, Brisbane 1982 and CWG Melbourne 2006).

The name of the Commonwealth Games has been shuffled Three Times. Between the years 1930 and 1950, the CWG were renamed as the British Empire Games and then the British Empire. From 1966 to 1974, the games were called the British Commonwealth Games and 1978 onwards they were titled to what is now the Commonwealth Games.

CWG were founded on the basis of history and not on the nations geographical position or climatic conditions. One of the main characteristics of the Games is that the participating countries share one common language. From Athletes to Coaches and other officials, everyone converse with each other in English, creating a friendly atmosphere leading to the games often being called as the “Friendly Games”.

In order to keep the CWG always competitive and exciting, the CWG Federation agreed to include team sports in Kuala Lumpur 1998 for the first time in the history of the Games.

Unlike other sporting events, Commonwealth Games bring together countries from different continents under one roof sharing the family spirit of the same historical moments, experiences and links that go beyond cultural barriers.

good to know about the history of commonwealth games. its hard to find the origins of such great games which have originated in some place and later on the headquarters shift some other place. i think cwg is more of a get together of commonwealth countries and sharing joy with each other on the occassion of events.
