When I was taught history in school, we were taught that Chanakya is the Indian Machiavelli,Samudragupta is Indian Napoleon abd Kalidas is Indian Shakespeare. As far as Chanakya or Kalidas are concerned I feel they are far superior to Machiavelli or Shakespeare. Shakespeare is , in my view, not comparable to Goethe,Homer or Dante. If Kalidas were compared to Goethe it would have been understandable. But the biggest problem is - Chanakya preceded Machiavelli by 2000 years, Samudragupta preceded napoleon by 1400 years and Kalidas preceded Shakespeare by 1000-1400 years. Hence , it is chronologically and psychologically wrong for Indians to know about their Great Persons by comparing them with Europeans. The comparison may have been valid for Europeans who learnt about our culture and Great Men by comparing and contrasting with their culture. But why should we follow the European path? Shouldn't we withdraw such misleading titles from our text-books.
