I Choose Humanities Over Science : Not Because I am 'Dumb'!

The Indian mentality has always been limited to only restricted and regular phenomena and fields. Every Indian parents have the wish to see their children as Doctors and Engineers. Families and particularly parents feel that only intelligent and bright students can dare to choose Science as a subject stream while those who are dumb and incompetent tend to take up Humanities. But in the recent few years the trend of this mentality has changed a bit. Gone are the days when people and even the students themselves had the feelings that only science can enable a person to make a good and successful career in the life. But now, many of the student thinking in a new horizon, they are now able to apprehend many bright opportunities in the Humanities that can provide better and diverisifed career options.

Humanities contains a good range of subjects such as; fine arts, psychology, sociology, politics, human resources, and others that are now getting admiration from many literate groups of people. There is a good scope research and experiments in all such subjects that can provide a satisfactory job prospects for a person. Thus, the mentality of choosing only science stream having thought of it as the only best option for career building; has been transformed now. The one who chooses Humanities over Science is not dumb rather is able to think for other better options suitable for their mindset and potential.

It is very sad how Humanities students are looked down upon and differentiated against in schools and even universities!

Unlike the stigma that surrounds the Humanities, this field, in fact, requires more thinking than a Science subject. Science requires the students to understand formulas and use them in questions.

However, humanities is a very vast field and requires a lot of reading and understanding.

I believe that some subjects of Humanities should be compulsory at every level. Also, so that the students can make a choice in their senior classes.

It is true that the world was dominated and ruled by “Science” once, but now the scenario has changed. It is more in the minds of people than in real existence. If an individual chooses humanities over science, he is perceived with frowning. The stream has nothing to do with being good or bad. It all depends on how one relates between the selected stream and his/her goals. It is usually said that, Humanities is common sense, anything to be scribbled upon. But let me tell you, Humanities deal with commonsensical things in the most judicious manner. It is the toughest job of explaining something which can only be seen and felt and understood. It is not as easy as any equation or derivation. If people choosing Humanities can be labeled as dumb; then what about all the eminent philosophers like Marx, Durkheim etc.? So friends, broaden up your mind and think beyond it. Humanities is something, we all deal with in our daily lives, yet we call the ones choosing it (as their career) as “Dumb”.
