Impact of Armed Force Expenditure on Economic Growth

The Expenditure on Armed Force is significant, but would that effect the Economic growth of our nation? Well, the expenditure on Armed Forces is around 2.5% of GDP but the bigger question is how this expenditure is being utilized by the armed forces. I believe the expenses should be concentrated on modernization and R&D so that we can start developing some indigenous technology to have an edge over the other nations. Mere "delayed" procurement of military equipments and units would not lead us anywhere ahead of any nation. If the expenses are just spent on unproductive actions, that could hamper the economic growth in a way. What do you feel?

Indian Armed force protects the nation from all the alien powers by sacrificing their lives and all the comforts. The expenditure on them cannot have an impact on our economic, however, I agree on the fact that government should concentrate on improving the technology and provide them with better equipments. I strongly oppose you that expenditure on armed force is unproductive rather, they are the ones because of whom we are having sound sleep. It is in no way hampering the Economic growth rather the expenditure on the politicians should be reduced which is totally unproductive and is indeed hampering the Economic growth.

Yes, you are right in a way. Expenditure on politicians is of total waste. But the worry is also that India spends a lot on purchasing defence equipments which are usually delivered late and by the time they reach India they become a little outdated. So rather India could optimize the expenditure of defence by taking up indigenous projects.

I completely agree with you. It is important to make the expenditure in the right way. Government should make plans on buying modern defence equipments rather than buying outdated ones. It is the duty and the responsibility of the Government to make Indian armed forces well equipped by providing them with modern-day defence equipments as well as give them the facilities that are important instead of making unnecessary expenditures.

It is sometimes about buying the old items, but most of the times it so happens that when we get into a contract to purchase any defence equipment, it gets commissioned/delivered late. And by then the technology becomes obsolete and there is a newer and better technology at that point of time. Hence, we can only suggest our government to take up indigenous developments or speed up the deliveries when we sign up any defence deals.
