Indian Cultural Dilemma: A Threat Already?

India is facing a shockingly factual cultural dilemma due to its blind love for everything with the ‘foreign’ label. The impact of westernization on India and its people is very strongly widespread despite India being one of the richest cultural heritages in the world.

The new generation is embracing everything in the western culture, and it is the basic human tendency that nobody bothers about the threat it may pose to our existence as an Indian.

India has rich and varied culture, which is said to have evolved from the ancient mythological era and historical civilization and is imbibed deep within the minds of every Indian. Indian traditions, customs, morals, values and beliefs are unique and stand out from all other global cultures because of its diversity.

The Indian concept of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ infuses the spirit of universal brotherhood where all the religions are given equal respect and space to flourish in peace and harmony. Each and every tradition in different forms of religious faith is celebrated as auspicious, so that there exists a feeling of homogeneity within heterogeneous beliefs. This practice also broadens the mindset of Indians so that they are capable of imbibing the good features of other cultures too.

But with the course of time, Indian cultural values appear a little overridden by the influence of western culture and philosophy that people have started imitating the western ways of living, risking our values and traditions. This cultural gap may slowly widen, and what we see as a fusion of cultures may bring us to being overpowered by western lifestyle.

There are no second thoughts that today’s new generation does not have the age-old cultural values that their parents and forefathers have followed. This is one of the main reasons for the increasing and alarming crime rate against women. The sexual abuse against women is a result of the lacking respect for women.

Contradictory to our great legacy of believing our parents and teachers at par with gods, today’s youth seems far from these. The pub-lifestyle, where liquor and money control everything, is ruling now. To add to the worries, relationships have become so fragile that ‘use-and-throw’ style has replaced the age old ‘stick-together-forever’ attitude.

While the foreigners are coming to India in search of peace for their soul, the Indian fitness freaks are running madly behind aerobics and modern style work-outs.

Welcoming foreign thoughts is like welcoming guests at home. We hope this “guest” does not invade the house. What do you people think ?
