In large measures, the anatomical differences between men and women have been seized upon by societies, past and present, to assign economic-provider role to men and child-rearing role to women. Traditionally women’s place is at home. That is, a woman’s primary role has been seen to be concerned with caring for child and husband and carrying out domestic chores such as cleaning and cooking.
Women are blessed with motherhood. As good wives they take care of men and are subordinate to male authority. They are largely excluded from position of prestige and power. Historically, the gender division of labor has operated to bind women to their reproductive function and their domestic function – isolated and undervalued. However, changes in women’s role and status are occurring throughout the world as a result of globalization, industrialism and modernization and women’s liberation movements.
It was only after the constitution of India declared equal rights for men and women in social, legal and political spheres that the position of Indian women have improved. Child infanticide has reduced by close to 100 percent in the last four decades. Women are allowed more rights now. Women have risen to power only after independence. Even educationally women enjoy similar rights and facilities as men do. The government has been very helpful in the purpose of restoring respect for women. The government of India has provided educational subsidies for women to encourage them to get qualified and enjoy a better standard of living.
In present conditions women are certainly on the rise and in future they could progress furthering life by breaking the shackles that still bind them backwards.
