Indian women have been of the concern since long time. The dis-empowerment and marginalization of the women in India have always been an issue to look into. Apart from this the health aspect of Indian women is also taking place in issues to be dealt with. Women suffer from poverty and hunger in more degree that what men suffer. Women who are important part of family need utmost care in health aspects as they are the ones who take care of family and bear child.
Unfortunately amongst the poorer sections in India, women’s health is neglected largely by the family and moreover by the women themselves. Due to such ideals taken up by the poorer sections, which contribute majority of the Indian population, women’s health has never been taken up seriously as a matter of concern.
There are certain broad aspects of health issues that have to be looked into, such as:
• Malnutrition : India ranks second in having most number of children suffering from malnutrition. One of the reasons for this being, women eat less and low nutritious food. This results in birth of malnourished children.
• Maternal mortality : Thousands of women of India die of childbirth related complications. India is supposed to have 10 times higher mortality rate than China.
• Lack of proper medical supervision and facilities : Though there are some primary healthcare units established in the rural areas, lack of properly trained staff is major concern. This is the reason why most of the complications take place during child deliveries
• Anemic women : India has highest number of married anemic women. Reason being; low quality food, illiteracy, and high cost of medical facilities. Many of the women are unaware of the iron content (about 18 mg per day for adult women) they should take for healthy hemoglobin content.
