Remembering Indira Gandhi on the day she had fallen to her assassins’ bullets exactly 25 years ago, her admirers said that her dynamism
and courage made it difficult to believe that actually so much time had gone by since the morning of October 31, 1984.

“A quarter of a century... it seems the other day,” said Sonia Gandhi, the daughter-in-law who had taken Indira’s bullet-riddled body to AIIMS from her 1 Safdarjung Road residence in an Ambassador.

“Indira Gandhi was one personality who never buckled under pressure in a difficult situation,” Congress chief Sonia Gandhi said on Saturday, speaking at the function for giving away the Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration.

This rugged determination characterised each of her major decisions — the Green Revolution, Bangladesh War, Sonia said. “She lived for the ideals of national integration and she died for these ideals.”

Speaking from the same podium, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said, “Even 25 years after her martyrdom, her legacy remains as strong and durable as ever and her vision still guides and inspires us and it will continue to do so for ages to come.”

Veteran journalist Balraj Puri, receipient of the award for his contribution to the peace process in Jammu and Kashmir, recalled a meeting with her in the heady days after the Bangladesh War. “This is the time for an initiative to resolve the Kashmir problem,” Puri remembered telling the then PM, setting the stage for a series of meetings with Sheikh Abdullah. The day began with the leadership paying homage to Indira at Shakti Sthal, her memorial. The PM, many of his cabinet colleagues, Sonia and her son Rahul — they all turned up commemorating the charismatic leader.

Indira the real Leader

To be honest Indira was the only PM worth to be called Leader she had the nerve to take some solid decisive decisions be it the indo pak war, Smiling Buddha , op.blue star even if it was a failure i don't think she intended to cause damage but unfortunately things got out of control she always regretted it all her life she was a dynamic leader we need leaders like her more now then ever before

Indira's vision still guides and inspires us.

Indira Gandhi was the only leader who lived for the country and its people. She was the leader with iron power and she had the guts to face any issue without any fear. She was the actual leader who brought the bright and beautiful and new image of India to the world. She not only dynamically leaded India to the world but compelled other nations to respect it. Today India needs a leader like Indira Gandhi, who can carve a new path for Indian and lead it again to the horizon of success and glory.

Indira leaves India a strong and robust path to lead on. she made a legacy for the men and women. she was a true leader as she did many good things for India such as making righteous decisions on India Pakistan war. i think the present leaders should take her ideals and follow her path instead of just praising her for what she did.

Indira Gandhi was a great leader to India during her tenure. we still remember her contributions during the indo-pak war.. she was the first lady to show determination and come into politics. i think indian ladies should take as her inspiration and come forward and change the existing scenario of women in Indian politics.

taking a look back into the independence era, indira gandhi was a honest, courageous women who supported indian nation during the epic indo-pak war..she being the first indian lady prime minister, left a strong legacy for others to follow. in my view indian women should not fall back looking at the men in politics, and rather take her as an example and show some courage.

Undoubtedly, Indira Gandhi had the guts and the vision. However, her approach to the government was quite authoritarian and she was quite influenced by the Communist philosophy.
She was not in favour of a free press and history has recorded that. It is good to embrace all that is good; however, we need to be aware of what was not good. This way we can take an objective decision rather than get swiped away by the popular feeling in the mass.
According to Amnesty International, 140,000 people had been arrested without trial during the twenty months of Indira Gandhi's Emergency. Of them, 40,000 had come from India's two percent Sikh minority.

The present corrupt scenario may be acceptable; however, dictatorship is certainly not.
