Kali Puja is celebrated on the day of Deepawali or Diwali. Generally, people celebrate Lakhmi Puja on this day but in many parts of the country people celebrate Kali puja. Godess kali was the first personification of Goddess Durga. It is celebrated on the new moon night of Kartik Amavasya in the Hindu month of Ashwin, according to the Bengali calendar. This festival is celebrated with great joy, splendor and spirituality in the states of Assam, Orissa and West Bengal. Devotees from all over, particularly Bengalis, Oriyas, and Assamese set up idols and images of Goddess Kali, together with those of Lord Shiva's at their residences and pandals as well as it is done in temples and the puja countinues all throughout the night until dawn. During the puja people engage themselves in fireworks, theater and other cultural shows. The houses are decorated with lights, candles and diyas which makes it even more beautiful.
