About Kalidas
Kalidas was a legendary Classical Sanskrit writer; who is considered to be the greatest poet and dramatist in Sanskrit language, which is the mother of all languages. Besides his legendry work, a very little is known to people about him. According to tale, he was known for his beauty, which brought him to the notice of Princess Vidyottama, who wanted to marry him. However, it is mentioned in the tales that Kalidas had grown up without much education and was quite dumb. The princess was ashamed of his ignorance and clumsiness. A devoted worshipper of Goddess Kali, it is said that he had meditated to have called upon his goddess Saraswati for help when he was going to commit suicide in a river after he was dishonoured by his wife, and being impressed by his devotion Goddess of learning showed up and blessed him with an extraordinary gift of intelligence. It is said that since then he have become the most gleaming of the "nine gems" at the court of the king Vikramaditya of Ujjain. Prodigy also has it that he was murdered by a courtesan in Sri Lanka during the reign of Kumaradasa. He wrote three plays in Sanskrit, which were the best among all times. Abhijñānaśākuntalam, Mālavikāgnimitram and Vikramōrvaśīyam. His lists of poems include Raghuvaṃśa, Kumārasambhava, Meghadūta and Ṛtusaṃhāra.
