Kamakhya temple is one of the famous shrines located at Guwahati, Assam. It is basically situated on the Nilachal hill in Guwahati at about 8kms away from the railway station. This temple is dedicated to the Goddess Kamakhya the bleeding goddess. The most fascinating thing about this temple is its origin story that is completely mythological based and that that there is no idol of Goddess in the temple instead a yoni /vagina looked like stone is being worshipped that is installed in the sanctum of the temple. Besides the Goddess Kamakhya Devi, the temple possesses ten other avatar of Goddess Kali which are; Matangi, Dhumavati, Bagola, Tara, Kamala, Chinnamasta, Bhairavi, Kamala, Bhuvaneshwari and Tripuara Sundari.
It is believed that this temple is one the Shakti Peeths out of 108 peeths in India and it was originated when Mother Sati attended a yagna at her father’s palace. When got to know that her husband Shiva was the only one to be excluded from the invites she could not borne this insult of her husband. And she jumped into the fire of the yagna and committed suicide. Seeing this disaster Lord Shiva got furious and began his tandav(the dance of destruction), to make him calm Lord Vishnu cut the dead body of dead Sati into numerous pieces and those pieces fell down on various places which later on got recognized as the Shakti Peeths in India. Kamakhya Devi temple is one of the Shakti peeths where Sati’s womb was supposed to fell down. Since then this temple worships the bleeding Goddess who actually menstruates. This temple celebrates the Fertility of Woman and it is a strong belief that the Goddess herself bleeds in the month of June every year the Brahmaputra River near the temple turns red. The temple remains closed for three days and on the fourth day the temple opens up with much of hustle bustle of celebration. This temple is a symbol of woman’s creativity and power to give birth.
