Kartik Poornima is an auspicious Hindu festival that is celebrated on the full moon day i.e. the fifteenth lunar day in the month of Kartik of the Hindu calendar. This festival is also known by the names of Tripuri poornima, Tripurari Poornima, Deva-Diwali or Deva-Deepawali. This festival is celebrated even by the followers of Jainism and Sikhism.

Significance of Kartik Poornima
The festival of Kartik Poornima is considered to be one of the auspicious festivals not only for the Hindus but also for the Jains. It is believed that on the day of Kartik Poornima by taking a dip in the holy river Ganga, people can get rid of their negativities and sins. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva celebrates the day for his victory over Tripuri demons. The majority of followers of Lord Shiva are well aware of the religious and auspicious significance of the Kartik Purnima. According to ancient account that are available in the Holy Scriptures, the power and might of the great Lord Shiva was at its vicious best and can be exposed in his victorious tale involving his substantial and overwhelming defeat of the demonic clans. This sequentially not only saved other Gods and deities of Hindu belief but also symbolized the perpetual veneration of the greatness of Lord Shiva. Even Millennium later, the emotion still generates the intensity of devotion that goes into extensive prayers for victory of good over evil. It is a significant instance that this day marks the re-ignition of the popular honour and devotion to this deity other than the festival of Maha Shivratri. According to Hindu Mythology, after completion of chaturmaas, this day is the beginning of Lord Vishnu’s sleep. Fasting in the Kartik month is deemed to be the path of attaining salvation in Kalyug. It is believed that on this day Lord Vishnu took avatar as Matsya or the fish incarnation in order to save Manu, the first man, from the archaic flood that destroyed the universe. Thus this day is also worshipped for his birth of Matsyaavatar of Lord Vishnu. It is also believed that worshiping Lord Vishnu on this day can generate immense fortune to devotees.

Traditions and celebration of Kartik Purnima
On the auspicious occasion of Kartik Purnima, horde of devotees unite on the pilgrim towns of Allahabad, Varanasi and Ayodhya to take a holy dip in the Ganges and other rivers as it is believed that it will wash off all the sins and negativity from them and help them achieve salvation. Different religious rituals are associated with this festival and differ from region to region as per beliefs and customs. An offering to the deities called Annakuta is held in the temples. After Shivaratri, Kartik Purnima is the largest festival dedicated to Lord Shiva. This day is also known as “Kartik Diparatna”, as many lamps are lighted in every household. Fairs are held in different parts of the nation on the auspicious occasion of Kartik Poornima. As per the Jain customs, the followers of Jainism visits Palitana, which is one of the most famous Jain pilgrimage centre to worship the Lord Adinath temple, which is situated on the top of the hill.
