Krishna Janmasthami is a Hindu religious festival, which is celebrated all over India to celebrate the birthday of Lord Krishna, who is the eight incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is celebrated on the eight day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadon of the Hindu calendar. This festival is also known as Krishnashthami, Saatam Aatham, Gokulashtami, Ashtami Rohini, Srikrishna Jayanti, Sree Jayanti and Janmashthami and is celebrated with fervour and grandeur.
About Lord Krishna
Shri Krishna is the eight incarnation of Lord Vishnu and is considered to be one of the most powerful of all the incarnations. He was born to Devaki and Vashudeva as their eight son and was the only surviving son as the earlier ones were killed by Devaki’s brother King Kansa. He was born on 19 July 3228 BCE on the eight day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadon of the Hindu calendar in Mathura. As his father Vashudeva sensed the danger over Krishna, he was secretly taken out of the prison where he was born to Gokul and was given to Yasoda and Nanda, who brought him up as his foster parents. He had spent his childhood in Vrindavan and several instance of his childhood mischief find a mention in the accounts present in the Indian epic. It is believed that Shri Krishna was born to remove the evil from the society and this is evident from the chronicles present in the great Indian epic Mahabharata as well as other Hindu mythology. He finally killed his maternal uncle King Kansa, who imprisoned his parents and killed his siblings. He also played a major role in Mahabharata in killing the Kauravas. His teachings are to be found in the Bhagavad Gita, which is a Hindu religious book.
