Kumbakonam is a famous pilgrimage destination of South India and is situated in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the oldest Temple cities of India, located on the bank of rivers Kaveri and Arasalar. The town is famous for Mahamaham Festival, which is celebrated once in 12 years and many devotees visit this place from all over India. It is known as the Temple City as it houses about 188 temples. The most prominent and significant temples here are the Sarangapani Temple, the Kumbeswara Temple and the Ramaswamy Temple. Apart from being a religious place, it also has a rich history and this is evident from the architecture of the temples, which were constructed bey different rulers who ruled the place. The town is also famous for betel leaf farming and brass vessels.
