Majuli Festival is celebrated on the banks of the mighty river Brahmaputra in the World’s largest island Majuli. It is a four day long festival that displays the Shatriya culture of Assam, which is held in the month of November every year to commemorate the contribution of Shankardeva towards binding the Assamese society.

Majuli, which is located in the state of Assam, on the bank of river Brahmaputra, which is known as Lohit in that region is the largest river island in the world. This island is formed by river Brahmaputra in the south and the Kherkutia Xuti joined by the river Subansiri in the north. The island is located 1,100 km away from the opening of Brahmaputra and had an area of 1256 sq km in 1991. Owing to the unremitting soil erosion the area has reduced to 875 sq km. This island was also short listed for consideration for UNESCO World Heritage status. Majuli has been the cultural capital of Assamese civilization since 16th century. The main village is Namghar, where people gather for important events, prayers and festivals. Situated in the middle of the mighty river, this island is an adobe of many migratory birds.
