He is a very simple old man who everyday goes door to door to collect the unused prescriptions and medicines from households. He says that many times so much of medicines are leftover in our homes with or without our attention.
People keep on accumulating them and one day they finally throw them in dustbins when find no use of them. And this is what he doesn’t want people to do, basically he wants to build up a Medicine Bank for the poor and needy people who cannot afford to buy expensive and even basic medicines due to lack of money. Thus, Omkarnath goes home to home to ask the people to donate the unused medicines to him, he says, “bachi dawaai daan mein naa ki kude-daan mein”. He has been doing this social work since the year 2008, everyday he take a bus to the neighbouring areas of Delhi and walks around 5-7kms, collects the unused medicines and prescriptions. He thoroughly scans the medicines and prescriptions and also keeps a record of them. He even sometimes, gets on random buses and makes the passengers aware about such an action.
He inspires them to donate medicines to him, his dress is quite unique that he wears while collection of medicines. He can be seen in a dark orange colored kurta upon which the whole information about his place along with phone numbers are imprinted. His main motive is to collect as many medicines as he can to make a bank out of them, he stores all the medicines in a small room that he has rented next to his home in Mangalpuri. Any poor needy person can come to this store and take medicines from him between 4-6pm. He is indeed a determined person who has to look after his family also but he tells that once an incidence left him in a complete shock when an under-construction Delhi Metro bridge in Laxmi Nagar collapsed and the poor labourers had to suffer a lot due to a lack of medical care. The nearest hospital also refused to give them medicines and sent them away saying that they did not have the required medicines. This incidence made him think deeply that on the one hand people cannot afford medicines and on the other so many medicines get discarded by households every day.
And finally he decided that he would certainly make a medicine bank for the poor people. Due to his hard work he was also able to donate some medicines to few hospitals which are useful in the treatment of cancer, AIIMS, Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Lady Irwin, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital are few where he has donated even unopened medicines. People who are inspired by him and appreciate him also give him donation which Omkarnath uses to donate medical equipments and beddings to the poor.
