Part of a different development

Whenever major development activities take place in a particular locality, the surrounding areas also benefit from it. The industrial establishments, educational institutions and administrative centers likewise attract human settlements in large numbers. In the next stage, these institutions set-up earlier operate as powerful magnets attracting similar functional characteristics. It is known as ‘functional magnetism’.

In the final stage, the centripetal forces lead to concentration of rich business groups to the sites in the central zone. Due to concentration of commercial and business activities in the central part of the town, the centripetal forces compel the shifting of residential areas towards the outer areas of the town. In this way, the centripetal forces cause a concentric growth pattern in town development while the centrifugal forces lead to peripheral growth and expansion. Consequently, people desirous of open spaces and healthy living amenities occupy the vacant and low priced lands in the outer margins for residential purposes. This is very much true of the present trend in the proliferation of Houses in Kerala.

Thus, the presence of wider roads, better drainage systems, good transportation facilities and suitable civic amenities help the outward growth of a town/city. Such conceptual models are not fully implacable in the Indian urban system due to unplanned and haphazard evolution of the town scape. However, these models are helping in the understanding as well as the conceptualization of urban growth pattern in the Indian conditions.

Kerala lagged behind in industrial growth for a long period of time. Almost all the major industrial groups shied away from setting up industries in the state in spite of the favorable natural climate and the abundant natural resources. After the liberalization of the Indian economy, this situation has undergone a sea change. Almost all the major business houses have already set up shop in this picturesque state. Thus a housing boom is continuing and is likely to scale phenomenal heights.

the development in india is taking place in an uneven fashion, with majority of concentration into the cities and metros. the rural areas are being neglected by the development authorities. even though some private companies lay out their plants in rural areas, not much is done from public sector to bring up the area into development.

yes the development is quite uneven on par with the actual output we see in figures of NNP and GDP. there are some places where there is minimal development made by the authorities of the respective areas. focus is onto the major industries of certain areas where development is too high which is increasing the net growth of the nation which actually is not of whole nations.
