The state of West Bengal once used to be the most developed state of India. West Bengal produces a major share of the agricultural output of India. strikes and hartals are common in the state and every month sees some holidays, thanks to the political strikes. However, the state of West Bengal has somehow managed to slip down the ranks in a massive way. The major reason for this has been the jeopardized political scenario
West Bengal politics have been crippled in the recent years starting from the protests in Singur for suspension of the Nano plant operation. For the last 32 years CPI(M) had held the leadership of the state with current chief minister being Mr. Buddhadeb Bhattacharya. However, this period may be said to be the worst of years of CPI(M) presence in West Bengal. Due to lack of developmental activities, the mass is ready to overthrow the leadership and Trinamul led by Ms. Mamata Banerjee seems to be playing the role of a strong opposition and that of a possible contender. In the last national level elections, Trinamul formed a part of the coalition government with the rail ministry being given to Ms. Banerjee.
Starting with the Singur issue that lasted for over two years, Trinamul Congress has played the role of other leading common sentiments like the standing against banning of diesel Autos to be replaced by LPG ones and the inability of the long CPI(M) governance to provide the state with adequate employment opportunities and reaching developmental goals. However Trinamul congress has been criticized widely for its development hindering demands and protests.
While CPI(M) is trying its best to recover its stand, the situation seems hard, at least for the time being. Trinamul Congress has already got overwhelming majority in the Municipal Elections and have overthrown the power in several districts.
