The education of children and young adults with special needs and disabilities is as important as for any other children without disabilities. Children with disabilities have always faced a crucial situation where their mainstreaming with other children in schools seems to be tougher. Mainstreaming of the children with disabilities means to give equal rights and opportunities to the children with disabilities as given to the children without disabilities while educating them in the school. But this inclusion of children with disabilities in the school requires the board/committee of the school to be more responsible and sensible for providing the required provisions and facilities for those children. Undoubtedly, there are most qualified teachers and facilities are available, but how many teachers and facilities are trained according to the needs of the students with disabilities? Since there are a few seats available for the disabled/handicap children that is why the school staff already takes it for granted and lags in providing the needed facilities for them. These children need special facilities and equipments but the school keep procrastinating those things and thus hesitates in admitting such children in their schools.
Persons with disabilities, especially children and the young, continue to be one the most disadvantaged groups in our society. Their manifest limitations apart, they are subjected to social discrimination, very limited work opportunities and all above, impoverished educational experiences. The Indian social system and that of the schools need to work upon important issues, including legislative measures, administrative and financial support, equality of opportunities, teacher training, classroom organization, curriculum modification and parental involvement. It is now widely accepted that children with disabilities should be educated alongside their age peers and be treated as full members of the community. However, this ideal is still a long way from being realized in India.
