Prostitution has spread like a fire in all over the India in the last few years, although we cannot remark to have a better status and conditions for the Indian women before these past years and unfortunately with rapidly increased prostitution acts, things have actually worsened than before. Selling of sexual services such as intercourse or oral sex in the exchange of money is known as the act of Prostitution. In the last few years numerous of young girls and ladies have entered into prostitution willingly or by coercion. Inflation, poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, lack of awareness, social customs and lack of recreational activities have tended to push the Indian women into prostitution. Prostitution has not been a newly emerged act rather it is a long established tradition of ancient India where the females were treated as ‘Devdasini’ and ‘Jogini’ or ‘sexual servants’. Those were the dancing girls who used to entertain and please the lords in the temples. Later on in the Mughal’s Empire this trend of devdasini purely converted into dancers and sexual servants who used to entertain the Mughals in their palaces. And this system is still going on in the contemporary society rather with a more pathetic image of being a social taboo.
There is a deliberate need to amend the menial mentalities of people that treat the women as incompetent and futile. The status of women in the society needs to be reshuffled and revived. Women are not commodities to satisfy the sexual urges, they are human beings too they also deserve freedom and dignity in life. so far prostitution is prevailing in the Indian social system, women can never visualize a free and dignified life for themselves. So far society would be accepting prostitution as normal and a causal social pattern, we can never be able to bring any change in the ethos of society.
