Raksha Bandhan, popularly known as Rakhi is a Hindu festival, which is celebrated to honour the pious bond and love between brother and sister. This is an auspicious festival for the Hindus and is celebrated not only in India but also in Nepal, Mauritius and in some parts of Pakistan. It is celebrated on the full moon day in the month f Shraavan or Sawan of the Hindu calendar.

About Raksha Bandhan
Raksha means to protect and Bandhan means bond and thus Raksha Bandhan marks the bond between brother and sister, wherein the brothers promise to protect their sisters from all odds and dangers. Rakhi is a string or a thread that a sister ties in the hand of her brother to mark the bond of love between them. This festival also has historical connection apart from having mythological significance. This festival has been celebrated since time unknown and the evidences of it are to be found in the chronicles of Hindu mythology. This festival finds its mention in the great Indian epic Mahabharata, where Draupadi, the wife of Pandavs tied rakhi on the wrist of Lord Krishna and since then she became his sister. There are many more such instances that are found in Hindu mythology. This festival was quite popular among the Rajputs and was practiced religiously by them. The Rajput Queens used to send rakhi to the Kings of the neighbouring areas to promote brotherhood and peace. There are also some other historical instances that proves the importance of this festival.

This is an auspicious festival for every Indian and is a major part of the rich and age old Indian culture.
