Shab-E-Barat is a religious Muslim festival that is celebrated all over the World on the month of Shabaan, which falls between the months of Rajab and Ramadaan of the Islam calendar. This festival is celebrated with fervour and grandeur as it is believed that on this very day the Almighty writes the future of people. History of Shab-E-Barat
The month of Shabaan is considered as the most auspicious month for the Muslim community as Prophet Mohammad referred to this month as “My Month” and fasted on this month. On the 15th night of this auspicious month is known as Shab-E-Barat. ‘Shab-E-Barat’ is a Persian word meaning ‘the night of payment or assignment’. In Arabic the day is known as Lailatul Bara'at, meaning the night of liberation. On this day, the Prophet visits each house and relieves the troubles and suffering of humanity on this night. According to the myth related with Shab-E-barat, there is a special tree in heaven that has the names of all mankind on its leaves and if a leaf with the name of a person falls this night, then it is strongly believed that that person is fated to die the same year. There are several chronicles present in the Islam mythology that enumerates the importance and the auspiciousness of Shab-E-Barat. People believe that on this particular month, the deeds of people are presented in front of God and accordingly he decides the future of human beings. According to the Sias, on this auspicious day, the 12th and last Imam, Imam Muhammad Abul Qasim was born. The night of Shab-E-Barat is also considered as the night of mercy and forgiveness. On this day, it is believed that people ask the almighty for mercy and forgiveness for their deeds. Celebration of Shab-E-Barat
On the pious and important night of Shab-E-Barat, the Mosques are lighted with candles and the male members gather together in the mosque to offer prayers. On this day, the Holy Quran is recited all through out the night, asking for forgiveness for all the evil deeds. On this day, people visit the graveyard (Kabaristhan) early in the morning to offer flowers and read fateh for the eternal peace of the departed souls. On this auspicious occasion, delicious, mouth-watering dishes are prepared and the wealthy people carry out charity by giving away food, money and clothes to the needy, with the belief that the Almighty will forgive them for all their bad deeds.
