The politicians need some issues to generate support. And often they choose an issue that is most likely to attract the attention of the masses. They want to divide the masses in a certain parameter and support the major portion to gain power.
Shiv Sena/MNS is applying the same tactic in Mumbai. Marathis are the majority in Mumbai. Gujaratis, Parsis, UPwalas, Biharis, South Indians are the other major groups. The economic power lies in the hands of Gujaratis and the Parsis. Shiv Sena would not have the courage to start an agitation to expel the Gujaratis and the Parsis. It can be said that the Gujaratis and the Parsis have the greatest contribution in the development of Mumbai. Shiv Sena knows it well that Mumbai cannot survive without the Gujaratis and the Parsis.
That’s why Shiv Sena/MNS needed some harmless target to gain political advantage. The people from UP and Bihar were a soft target for Shiv Sena/MNS. Most of the people from UP and Bihar are engaged in small jobs. A major portion of the taxiwalas, autowalas, panwalas, doodhwalas and the daily laborers are from UP and Bihar. Shiv Sena took them as a soft target to establish their political power. However it cannot be said that the UPwalas and the Biharis have less contribution in the city. All the essential services will come to a standstill without them. But Shiv Sena knew it well that if they attack the people from UP and Bihar, they won’t be able to hit back. It will also not have a greater impact on the economy of Mumbai as the financial capital.
We need a system in our country to curb such dirty politics. Political power at the cost of our national integration can be termed as an internal terrorism. The state must have policies to control it.
