There is surely no end to this debate – whether students should be part of political world or student politics ought to go on in the university campuses.Well, India is no different to the same contention and in the midst of all these, student politics is going on in the Indian educational scenario in full momentum. As per one school of thought, students must remain concerned with their own interests and hence they should form one union instead of working as student cadres of different political parties or assorted deologies. It may be that you’re also influenced by the same doctrine but to many pundits, more than even you can conceive, consider this idea as fanciful only. As per these pundits, students happen to be the most sensitive section of a society and a receptive mind is certain to react against any form of tragedy like Naxalbari, Bhopal or even Nandigram.
Truly speaking, these arguments are not new and have been dominating the pertinent scenario since the commencement of student politics in India. The concept of students’ active participation in politics in India had its commencement during the early part of 20th century and it was the time when India was fighting tooth and nail against the British imperialism. The students, by means of their immense bravery and sacrifices, became able to occupy a strong position in the political scenario and at times, in absence of senior leaders, the student leaderships were witnessed to carry out the mass movements.
The vigor of student politics got a new shape with the national independence. Whether it’s the question of national harmony or unification, war with neighboring countries, arbitrary decisions or harmful policies of the governments, student politics has played commendable roles. But certainly these are also not free of disadvantages. Instead of working as soldiers of country, student unions, at times, have worked as the vanguards of political parties only and the country has been the worst sufferer.
Last but not least, in spite of the strong presence of student politics, an inhuman dearth of noble natures in Indian politics is being witnessed. And the discredit lies with the student politics only.Unless it gets educated yet again, there is little hope of its resurgence.
