Nothing can ever repay the biggest debt of a solider who willingly and happily sacrifices his life to protect his motherland from the enemy. And in fact, none of the solider asks for any reward because their sacrifice and duty is truly selfless. But the country never forgets the great sacrifices of all those soldiers who devoted their lives to the motherland and died in its sake. The Param Vir Chakra is one such highest military embellishment that is awarded by the Government of India for showing the highest extent of bravery, eminent acts in front of the enemy and life sacrifice made in the name of the nation whether on the ground, sea or in the air. This is the second highest award after the Bharat Ratna being awarded in India. Param Vir Chakra was established by the President of India on 26th January 1950.

This award was designed by Savitri Khanolkar who got married to Vikram Khanolkar; an Indian Army Officer. The award basically was designed with a humble request of First Indian Adjutant General, Major General Hira La Atal. It was Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru; the first Indian Prime Minister who delegated the responsibility to General Hira Lal to come up with a new embellishment award that could replace the British Victoria Cross. It was then finally Savitri Khanolkar who designed the Param Vir Chakra. The embellishment is made up of a bronze circular disc whose diameter is 3.49cm. At the center of the disc, there is an image of the state emblem which is surrounded by the four replicas of Indra’s Vajra. On the back side of the disc that is basically a plain side possesses two legends separated by lotus flowers. The words; Param Vir Chakra are written both in Hindi and English. A purple colored ribbon that is 1.3inches (32 millimeters) long grips the medal Param Vir Chakra. The image of the Vajra symbolizes the Rishi Dadhichi who donated his bones to create the Vajra from those bones. For the very first time the Param Vir Chakra was awarded to Somnath Sharma for his eminent bravery act in Kashmir operation in Novemeber 1947 and who was also the brother of Lt General Surinder Nath Sharma; son-in-law of Savitri Khanolkar.

This award is given to the officers or commissioned personnel belonging to all the branches of the Indian Military. This award might be awarded to the military personnel or awarded postmundane. Along with the embellishment a cash allowance is also given to those who are under the rank of lieutenant. And posthumous of the recipient a pension is also given to the widow until her remarriage or death. So far total 21 Param Vir Chakra have been awarded out of which posthumous awarded are 14 in number. And Sanjay Kumar, Subedar Major Bana Singh and Yogendra Singh Yadav are the only three personnel who have been awarded the Param Vir Chakra and still serving the Indian Defense.
