Popularly known as the “temple City”, Bubaneshwar is the capital of Odisha/orissa . It is one of the oldest cities of India and has a rich historical background that dates back to 2000 years. It was the ancient capital of Kalinga Empire, which is testified by the historical monuments present in the city. The city houses several Hindu temples and historical monuments , which attracts the visitors from different parts of the world. Lingraj Temple

Built during the 11[SUP]th[/SUP] century A.D., Lingaraj temple is a popular attraction of the place. It depicts the result of the development of temple architecture in the state of Orissa. This temple houses more than 64 shrines within the premises and each of these temples are beautifully adored, featuring idols of Gods and Goddess. There are also sculptures of dancing girls, Kings, Queens, musicians and hunters, which depicts the richness of the place.

Konark Sun Temple

Dedicated to Sun God, the Konarak Sun Temple is an architectural marvel and has managed to attract the tourists from different regions. Intricately carved, this temple was built during the 13[SUP]th[/SUP] century. It stands 30 meters high on 12 massive wheels, which is a huge chariot, designed for the Sun God Surya. Representing the architecture of the ancient times, this Hindu temple is thronged by pilgrims and tourists all throughout the year.

Jagannath Puri


Situated at a distance of about 60.8 km from the main city of Bhubaneshwar, Puri is one of the most popular attractions in its vicinity. It is a beach destination, which remains crowded all throughout the year. Puri houses the famous Jaganath Temple, which is visited by pilgrims from all over the nation. It is also famous for hosting the Jaganath Rath Yatra festival and during this time, this beach city is thronged by people from different parts of the World.

Mukteshwar Temple

Built during the 10 century A.D., the Mukteshwar temple is one of the smallest temples in Bhubaneshwar. However, it's famous for its delicate stone archway, and ceiling with eight petal lotus inside its portico. A number of the carved images (including lion head motif) are visible in the temple architecture. The temple's name, Mukteshwar, means "Lord who gives salvation through yoga". The temple is a must-visit place of the city.

Rajarani Temple

The Rajarani temple is unique in that there is no deity associated with it. There's a story that the temple was a pleasure resort of an Oriya king and queen (raja and rani). However, more realistically, the temple got its name from the variety of sandstone used to make it. The carvings on the temple are particularly ornate, with numerous erotic sculptures. This often leads to the temple being referred to as the Khajuraho of the east. Another of the temple's striking features is the clusters of smaller carved spires on its spire. The spacious and immaculately kept temple grounds are a peaceful place to relax if you want a break from sightseeing.
