Shillong, “The Scotland of the East” and the “Style capital of North-East” is situated in the north-eastern state of Meghalaya and serves as the capital. The state lies on the eastern part of the state in the Khasi Hills. One of the most beautiful hill towns of India, Shillong is situated at an average altitude of 4,908 ft above the sea level. Shillong offers a mesmerizing beauty of the nature, surrounded by lush green hills, pine wood forest, gushing waterfalls and amazingly beautiful flowers. This city is worth visiting, which attracts the tourists from many parts of the World. Cherrapunji and Mawsynram are the two places that records the highest rainfall in the World is situated in proximity to the city. In addition Shillong offers a glimpse of the matriarchal society, which further attracts the travelers to the place. Shillong Peak


Situated at an elevation of 1965 meters above sea level, Shillong Peak is one of the popular places of Shillong that attracts the tourists. 10 km from the main city, this is an ideal spot for picnic in the city offering a panoramic view of the city that is sure to mesmerize the visitors with the beauty. The highest point of the city, curtsy is paid to U Shulong at the chamber at the peak's acme every spring, by the religious priest of Mylliem State. In the evening the city lights below appear like a star-studded chasm.

Elephant Falls

Situated in the outskirts of the main city, Elephant Falls is another popular place among the tourists to the city. Two waterfalls cascades down the lush green hills together, which offer an enthralling view that attracts the visitors making them compelled with its amazing beauty. At a short distance beyond the falls, there are two smaller falls which are none the less beautiful and captivating. These are the Wei Iaplam Falls and the Wir Phang Falls. A well paved footpath and a small wooden bridge facilitate access to these falls.

Ward’s Lake


An artificial lake, Ward Lake is situated near the Raj Bhawan close to Police Bazaar, the biggest commercial hub of Shillong. The horse-shoe shaped lake has a beautiful bridge over it and set in a landscaped Botanical Garden. This lake is popular for boating and features beautifully landscape garden that attracts the tourist. Both the botanical garden and the Government museum of Shillong lie in proximity to park, which are as well worth a visit. Visitors can spend the evenings amidst the beauty of the nature by visiting this beautiful and well-maintained lake.

Cherrapunji


About 56 km from the main town of Shillong, Cherrapunji is the old administrative headquarters of the Khasis. It is amazing to see this place which looks so dry on a sunny day and in the monsoons, the water comes in fast-moving water and in a matter of minutes it falls on the cliffs and is absorbed in the gorges and the plains below. This place once held the record as the wettest place on earth according to the Guiness Book of Records and has an annual rainfall of nearly 11000 mm, but this record has now been broken by Mawsynram. Even after receiving so much rainfall, this place still has a four month dry season from November to February.

Mawsynram

The most popular place of tourist attraction is Mawsynram, which is about 55km drive from the city of Shillong. This place receives highest rainfall in the World and has deafeted the record of Cherrapunji. The major attraction of Mawsynram is a charming cave of vast and uncultivated depth, featuring a massive stalagmite, in the shape of a natural Shivalinga, which is bathed the year round by water dropping from an overhanging stalactite. This is the main place of pilgrimage of Hindus, and a natural wonder for the tourist.
