Unsung Heroes of India Freedom Struggle

We all know that the freedom fighters were the most courageous and brave-hearted people who did not even think of their lives and sacrificed them for the sake of the freedom of the motherland. Freedom struggle was truly crucial and it could not have been achieved without the persistent efforts of numerous of people, however so far we have been aware of only few of the famous names but there were other significant people also whose contribution remained unsung. So here are those freedom fighters we have not even heard of.


Rani Gaidinliu
Rani was strictly against the conversion of Naga religious practitioner to Christianity although she was herself a spiritual and a political leader but sheer led a strong revolution against the British Rule in India. She actively joined and participated in the Heraka religious movement that intended to drive the British out from Manipur and nearby Naga regions. She was 16 times sent to the jail and was later imprisoned for lifetime but in the 1937 when Jawaharlal visited her he promised to Gaidinliu for her release and gave her the title of ‘Rani’. Rani was also felicitated with Padma Bhushan Award.

Alluri Sitarama Raju
Sitarama Raju was referred to as Manyam Veerdu means the Hero of the Jungles by the local people of his region; he fought against the British Rule and led the Rampa Rebellion movement in the year 1922-24. He devotedly participated in the Indian freedom struggle and courageously helped his tribal men folks who were harassed by the British officers under the Forest Act.

Pingali Venkayya
Pingali was a devotee of Mahatma Gandhi and popularly known as Diamond Venkayya as he was an expert of knowledge of diamond mining. His significant contribution is counted in the designing of the national flag of India; he was also administering in agriculture, geology and education.

Tanguturi Prakasam
Tanguturi was the first Chief Minister of Madras Presidency and then Andhra state he was an active freedom fighter who gave up his practice of Law for the sake of the Indian freedom struggle. In 1928 during a protest against Simon Commission in Madras he fiercely faced the police and dared them to shoot him if they could this brace act of his won him the title of Andhra Kesari means the Lion of Andhra.

Veerapandiya Kattabomman
Veerapandiya protested against the dominance of the East India Company and also refused to pay the taxes, he was basically a brave-hearted chieftain from Tamil Nadu in the 18th Century sixty years earlier the Indian War of Independence he prosecuted a war with the British that took place in the Northern parts of India. His fort was destroyed and looted by the British Army, he was also captured and hanged later on.

The Trio: Benoy, Badal & Dinesh
These three men would always be remembered for the powerful attack they did on the Dalhousie Square in Kolkata. The Inspector General of Prisons; Col N.S Simpson was very ill known for his brutal acts against the prisoners and this trio did not only try to murder Simpson but also tried to terrify the British Officers by attacking on the Secretariat Building, Kolkata. Later the Dalhousie Square was renamed as the B.B.D Bagh after the names of Benoy, Badal and Dinesh.

Surya Sen
Suryan Sen was the mastermind behind the Chittagong Police Depot raid; he along with other sixty four revolutionaries trapped the depot and destroyed its whole ambiences including the dislocation of the railway lines also. Sen was captured and hanged to death.

Surendra Sai
Surendra began his protest against the British Rule since the age of 18 and had spent seventeen years of his life in jail after that. He continued to protest till the year 1862 after which he surrendered and was imprisoned later that. He died with uncertainty while protecting Western Orissa from the British along with a few other compatriots. He also helped the lower caste tribal people in Sambalpur by motivating their dialect and culture. It was all because of the efforts of Surendra Sai that Sambalpur was safer for a long time and was the last piece of land to be captured by the British.

Potti Sreeramulu
Potti was a devotee of Gandhi and was often called as the Amarjeevi. He had this tremendous capability to fast for numerous of days he was even praised by Gandhi himself for his ability of fasting. His whole life was spent for the sake of people of his motherland he worked as a humanitarian particularly for the Dalit community. He sacrificed his life during the fasting period for demanding a separate linguistic state of Andhra from the Madras Presidency.

Many other important names should be included here; Kushal Konwar, Piyali Phukan, Kanak Lata Barua, Acharya N.G Ranga, Tirot Singh.
