About Maharishi Valmiki
Maharishi Valmiki also at times pronounced as Balmiki was the author of the great Indian epic Ramayana. He was a great poet and a master in Sanskrit literature, which is the mother of all languages. Valmiki was the first one to discover the first shloka. He lived during the Treta Yuga and in the guidance of his spiritual master, he wrote the epic Ramayana prior to Lord Rama’s arrival.
According to the Vedas the utmost blessings in life is to have relationship with a saint, or a devotee of Krishna. In his early life Valmiki’s name was Ratnakara, who used to rob people for his living. Once good he happened to come across Narada Rishi and tried to attack him. Narada chanted Lord Rama’s name and convinced Ratnakara to give up his life of larceny and he readily followed the advice of Narada. He started chanting the name of Rama and meditated for several years. During this period, his body was covered by ants and Narada Rishi came down to the earth to unveil the sage from the anthill and told him that his meditation was successful and since then he was renamed as Valmiki as he was born from an anthill. Valmiki heard the story of Lord Rama from Narada and Lord Brahma, who is maker of the Universe, instructed him to write the story in the form of poetry.
Valmiki was alive when Lord Vishnu came to the earth in form of Ramachandra. He was visited by Lord Rama, his wife Sita along with his brother Lakshmana during their fourteen year exile period. This period has been well described in the Ramayana, where Valmiki gave them shelter and the two sons of Lord Rama were born and they spent the period of exile.
