Youth on Facebook : how much purposeful is it?

Facebook; is one of the famous social sites for the youth these days! Such an enormous impact it has created for the youth and that it has now become an indispensable part of their daily life. The youth feels that Facebook has given them an Identity that is known to everyone, that has access to meet as many people as it wants. Facebook has given a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge one's personality and voice in front of others. Many of the individuals among the youth find Facebook to be a good medium to connect with the people and to promote their thoughts and ideas on a larger scale. Right from the likes/dislikes, ideologies, career, profession, life events every information is available about the person . Facebook provides full liberty to the people to represent one's self the way he/she wants to. But in the recent years Facebook has become a kind of addiction for the people who uses it without having any purpose or for the sake of fun. Most of the youth is found to be addicted to getting the likes on their pictures and posts, addiction of receiving more notifications and Inbox messages and even increasing the friend's list. They get anxious and restless and spend the whole day in surfing the Facebook.

I do not deny that there is a section of the youth that is making a purposeful and right use of Facebook for promoting their works, plans and ideas with the mass but I am focused on the section of youth that is ignorant of the true purpose of Facebook in their lives. They are knowingly or unknowingly wasting an ample of time in doing nothing worth on Facebook. They are much content in posting their personal pictures, playing Farmville and using other games & applications. It is a serious matter for the youth to realize the purposefulness of Facebook in their lives. Do you support this idea?

We all know the literal definition of Facebook – a social networking site. My reason to emphasize that lies in the realization that today’s youth is highly dependent on networking for its survival. Not only for personal reasons but to my astonishment, these networking sites are even being used by companies to be aware of their employees’ social abilities. Obviously it is evident that people only show their masked faces on public platforms because lifestyles now have become all about public performance. Yet it would be wrong to say Facebook is not purposeful. Depending on the way of its usage, Facebook-ing has not only connected people but enhanced their consciousness about ongoing issues around the World. People now have become keyboard warriors but it is good to know that they atleast respond and participate in discussions.

Facebook is just another social platform which is mishandled. The above comment reflects the positivity of some people but with no offence really meant I would like to point out that the weightage of demerits is capable of overpowering the merits these social networking sites like Facebook offer. We cannot focus only on one aspect and consider the problems solved. It might be useful to some extent to professionals who are successful in handling it in useful ways but to kids of this generation, Facebook is becoming a means of outperforming their friends in respect to status. Showing off, developing a sense of materialistic approach, boasting about one’s achievements, developing feelings of jealousy, superiority and hatred are some of the biggest demerits that Facebook brings with itself for kids and teenagers. So totally concluding it’s purposefulness on the positive scale would be wrong.

Technology has landed us somewhere, where there is a very easy and convenient access to any kind of productive activity. Facebook, the most widely used one has become a habit rather than a positive approach. As other fellow writers have already highlighted certain facts regarding this issue; agreeing with them, I would like to say that, Facebook has literally lost the true essence of it with the due course of time. It has become one of the basic reasons of an individual being socially active more in this virtual world of technology rather than in this existing world. Today, guys are chained by these virtual friends; have more attachment with; in comparison to this real world. So, although the approach of Facebook was to develop and share knowledge once, it has been strongly overlapped by casual chit chats of the youths.
