Why is poetry important in today’s society?

Each poem is a voice which needs to be heard. We all chase to be first, to earn more, to be the happiest, but have we stopped and thought about it, what actually are we running after. The simplest life circle suggests that if you have taken birth, your journey of life moves towards death. When life is such a simple calculation, then what is complicated. Emotions; Feelings; Moods; these can easily define what we are going through. In this technology age, where everything is virtual, it’s very hard to perceive the real emotion. Which is shoving this generation into depression, because there are no mediums left, where you can pour your heart out without hurting anyone or self. Every art form is an independent medium to showcase, what is in artist’s mind or heart, but with a few restrictions of course. Because people are conscious about what they see and hear, however they feel free to abuse others, their truth, independent art and the list goes on.

Poetry helps you to conjecture the depth of reality, which is unattainable though. Rather it helps you to question about the inner and outer world, the existing and the created world, the real and the virtual world. This exercise helps you to grow honest, because a poet can never lie to himself. Though his words can reroute you from reality to an imaginative world, or they can spit a harsh reality in your face. Each poem is a child that even after hundreds of thousands of years will remain a child, a most innocent reflection of a poet mating with certain circumstances. It is the bottled emotions which can intoxicate your soul, every time you take a sip of it. At times you grow with a poem, and at times a poem grows with you. A poetry can be your friend, because every time you read a poem, it has some thing new to gift you, and can never leave you alone. Poetry knows how to comfort itself in your conscience.

A poet is honest and sensitive, and so is his poetry; his words reflect the mirror of time. Poetry can fairly display the reality of world, which are hidden, not much discussed, taboo subjects. A poetry acts as an individual with ideal aesthetics and moral values, but mature enough to deal with restrictive fence. Poetry can be heard if not read, it can be felt if you cannot understand the language. At times, it is submissive to the poet, or acts like one. Most of the times, it dominates the readers or the listeners. Poetry is cheap and poetry is luxury. Luxury is a state of mind, poetry is a state of mind contemplating time. It helps you to amplify your sense of understanding things or situations in a much more advanced way, without losing the set of traditional principles. A poet chooses words to give away. Poetry can be the best therapy, to deal life in a much positive way, if you start noting down the moments of life, good or bad, they are precious. Wisest therapy, I must say, because it helps you to know yourself and it also helps you to change for the better. It also helps the society to face the reality in a much broader way, and not cringe about the man made taboos.

  1. Neha, You are bringing a very important question and I am so happy to see Indian Youth discussing the importance of Poetry. I recently heard a talk where they discussed how Artificial Intelligence can create Poems on par with famous poets. But my answer to that is (AI) might be able to create Poetry but only human intelligence can appreciate it. The world becomes better with Poetry, The world becomes more calm, considerate and equal with poetry. Poetry helps people connect.. we can go on and on.. but what is important is we keep putting out that question so people can think. Thanks for Writing this

  3. indeed! good point raised here, poetry knows all truth and can be used to repair the society, but the world never allow and accept the truth, for them poetry is just a hobby and nothing more.. keep raising such points. best wishes!
