Ford EcoSport Car Review 2014

Let’s be honest to ourselves, all of us want a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) for the sheer solidity, size and road presence. Sadly, not many in India can afford a Safari, Scorpio, Fortuner or an Endeavour for obvious reasons. This is the reason that when a certain Renault Duster was launched in 2012, it took the market by storm and for the first time, Indian buyers were familiarized with the concept of a compact SUV. Not only did Duster create a niche for itself, this model set a platform for others to follow. Ford, to say the least, has made full use of this window of opportunity to stamp its authority and launched the EcoSport, which has been a roaring success till now. Introduced in June 2012, this compact SUV has seized the initiative from Duster to become the benchmark setter in not only the segment but the entire market. Along with Honda Amaze, Ford EcoSport can arguably be called the best launch of 2013. However, cynics, as they are, have been wondering whether it is just the aggressive price tag or the Ford EcoSport actually packs a punch. From the very first time you take a look at EcoSport, the words modern or urban cross your mind. The American car maker has put in a lot of effort to maintain a balance between the classic SUV look without compromising on the next-gen theme. First thing that one notices about this car is its superb looking grille that is flanked the cluster of lights, adding to the boldness of EcoSport. Fog lamps present on this car are conspicuous and have been appreciated a great deal by critics and customers. Despite being quite compact, this model has a terrific road presence due to its high ground clearance, which is one of its main advantages. The 200 mm ground clearance and 550 mm water wading help the driver to manoeuvre this car easy through waterlogged streets or areas with potholes, things that one often comes across in a country like India.

Interiors of EcoSport represent the true technological sophistication levels of a Ford model. If there is one thing that the American car maker has succeeded completely in designing the EcoSport, it is providing plush interiors. There is a slight issue in the front co-passenger seat as there is no armrest, which is somewhat of a disadvantage. Keeping this aside this compact SUV scores really high, be it in terms of technology, comfort or convenience. In fact, EcoSport is one of the best in its price range if one talks about convenience features. The highlights of this car are power adjustable outer rear view mirrors, cooled glove box, 3.5-inch MFD screen, 4 speakers, MP3 player and SYNC (with Voice Control). Hill Launch Assist is the USP of this car as it helps in smooth acceleration on hills.

Irrespective of appearance, technological advancements or interiors, a car is always known due to the quality of its engine. EcoSport is available to customers in three engine options, which includes two petrol and one diesel. One petrol variant runs on 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine that delivers an output of 123 bhp along with peak torque of 170 Nm. Everyone has marvelled at the ability of the EcoBoost engine to deliver such an incredible power level. The other petrol version is fitted with a 1.5-litre powertrain that churns out around 110 bhp and top torque 140 Nm. On the other hand, EcoSport diesel runs on a 1.5-litre drivetrain that generates 89 bhp and torque of 204 Nm. Customers have appreciated the driveability of the EcoSport and its suitability for the city.

To put things in a nutshell, EcoSport is the absolutely right car for the middle-class urban customer who wants to drive an SUV that is fuel-efficient and affordable.
