Who should get the prestigious Bharat Ratna? It is one of the highly debated issues in the country , everyone has something to say about it and discussions usually end up without any results. Notably, Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award in India and is awarded to a person who has done extraordinary work to serve the nation. Only recently in 2011, the eligibility for this award was changed to allow sportspersons too to receive it. The Prime Minister and Minister of Home affairs initiated the eligibility amendment making it possible for exceptionally talented people like Sachin Tendulkar, Viswanathan Anand and Dhyan Chand from different sports to qualify for the award. However, the changes were criticized by some people as they believe that sports performances are nowhere even close to nation service.
The UPA Government has surely expanded the scope of Bharat Ratna and now with people aware and talking about national issues, more than they ever did through the power of web, recommendations will be highly debated. The fact is that if you have to pull out one recommendation from the sports world then it has to be Sachin Tendulakar. His contribution to Indian Cricket has been immense to say the least. However, is it too early to recommend him for the most prestigious civilian award in the republic of India? A lot has been said about it.
We Proud Indians & thinkers believe that great leaders like Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and Bhagat Singh are far more eligible if the award is about national service.
Their contribution to the battle of freedom is unquestionable. Both have sacrificed their lives for the sake of it and their exceptional service for the freedom of India deserves recognition of highest order so that the generation to come can understand their role in shaping up the future.
So are achievements of Sachin Tendulkar not worthy enough? Well if a man can bring joy to the faces of people who are struggling against corruption and poverty, if a man can stop the whole nation when he is batting and if a man is believed to be the God of cricket then nobody can argue about his eligibility. It is just that it would be better to award him the Bharat Ratna after sometime. He surely deserves it and will get it one day but for now, it would be better to recognize the sacrifices made by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and Bhagat Singh for the dream of free India.
