Bipin Chandra Pal was a distinguished politician, journalist, a prominent speaker and one among the three eminent patriots, well-known as Lal Bal Pal. The other two were Lala Lajpat Rai and Bal Gangadhar Tilak. He was one of the main planners of the Swadeshi movement. He stood against the partition of West Bengal.

Bipin Chandra Pal was born on 7th of November 1858 to an affluent family at Habiganj, now in Bangladesh. He went to Calcutta for his higher education and got himself enrolled in the prestigious Presidency college but left studies before graduating. However, he had incredible proficiency in literacy and studied various books comprehensively. He started his career as school teacher and also worked as a librarian in the Calcutta Public Library. There he came in got in touch with Keshav Chandra Sen and others like B.K.Goswami, Shivnath Shastri and S.N.Banerjee, who motivated him to take active participation in politics. Soon he got inspired by the extremist patriotism of Tilak, Lala and Aurobindo. In 1898 he went to England to study comparative theology but he returned to India within a year but came back to preach started preaching local Indians with the idea of Swaraj. As he was a journalist and speaker he always used articles, speeches and other write ups to spread nationalism, humanity and social awareness along with the need of gaining Independence from colonial rule. With immense audacity he participated in Bombay session of Indian National Congress in 1904, Partition of Bengal in 1905, Swadeshi Movement, Non Cooperation Movement and Bengal Pact in 1923.

His contribution towards the freedom struggle was remarkable. As a journalist he used his profession in dissemination patriotic feelings and social awareness among the people of India through his articles. Healso published several journals, weekly and books to spread the feeling of nationalism and the idea of Swaraj. Among the most famous books written by Bipin Chandra Pal were Indian Swaraj and the Present Situation, The Basis of Social Reform, Nationalism, Nationality and Empire, The Soul of India, The New Spirit and Studies in Hinduism. He was also the editor of the 'Democrat', the 'Independent' and many other journals and newspapers. “Paridarsak” (1886-Bengali weekly), “New India” (1902-English weekly) and “Bande Mataram” (1906-Bengali daily) and “Swaraj” are some of the journals that were started by him to fire up the freedom movement and spread nationalism.

It was the three leaders, LAL, BAL and PAL, who initiated the first popular revolt against British colonial policy during the 1905 partition of Bengal. Even before Mahatma Gandhi had entered the scrimmage of Indian politics, they worked together to free India from British rule. Bipin Chandra Pal accepted the constructive result of the British kingdom, but he at the same time advocated the federal idea of India. With the other two members - Lala Lajpat Rai and Bal Gangadhar Tilak , Bipin Chandra Pal meted out a number of revolutionary process like boycotting goods made by British, burning Western clothes and lockouts in the British owned businesses and industries to send their message across to the British Government. Later, during the course of his life, Bipin Chandra Pal came in touch with important Bengali leaders.

He was among the first to disparage Gandhi or the 'Gandhi party since it wanted to reinstate the present government by no government or by the pastoral despotism of the Mahatma. Pal disparate Gandhiji's non-cooperation Movement of 1920. His condemnation of Gandhi was unrelenting beginning with Gandhi's arrival in India and open in 1921 session of the Indian National Congress, wherein he delivered his Presidential speech. There her put forward his views and stated a relentless criticism of Gandhi's ideas, which according to him was based on enchantment rather than reasoning. Pal practically withdrew from politics from 1920 though he expressed his views on national questions till his death. He was a great leader and a true nationalist, who contributed selflessly towards the freedom movement of India. He died on 20th May 1932 and India lost its fervent and devoted freedom fighter.
