India is knowledge hub of the word but it is feared that today's educational system is producing brains oriented toward self centered motives, aimed at earning more money. The right values and beliefs which create youth who look beyond themselves and are willing to sacrifice their personal interest for common benefit are missing from today’s youth. Following is an address to children of a government school which appears very appropriate
Respected HM madam, teachers and my dear children. Today I feel extremely happy to be among you, because it takes me back to my childhood when I was like you. Full of hope for future and anxious to manage the expectations of teachers and parents, I remember how much fun it was to spend time with friends, play with them, enjoy with them, and quarrel with them. Many times we had differences, but we played and fought together, and I swear you, I still cherish the memories of those days, because they were the days which have helped me to learn important lessons of life. Lesson about how to live and enjoy company of other even when there are differences, lesson about not to loose hope when things are not favorable, and lesson about not be afraid of hard work because in life nothing comes free. Today I would like to share with you my beliefs about life and success.
My father is a great farmer and my mother is a simple house wife, although they are not highly educated but they had deep desire to make their children excel. With limited resources and with abundant constraints, in small village of UP, they taught me to be ambitious, to dream big, and to achieve something on which they can be proud. They taught me the importance and meaning of discipline: discipline means sacrificing your present comfort for achieving some thing more important in future. They taught me that if man has a vision and if he is passionate to achieve it; with disciplined efforts it is always possible to convert his vision in to reality. And it was with these basic lesson I decided to become engineer.
Today when I look back and remember the days of my struggle, I confess with you, there were many moments of despair, several time I felt that it is impossible to get what I want, many times I become disappointed and was on the edge of giving up, but every time I felt defeated a small still voice from within asked me to continue my efforts.
It was my persistence which ultimately brought me where I am today. My struggle has revealed me a fundamental principle of success
whatever be the situation, even if you are not able to see the ray of hope and every thing appears dark around you, even if you are not able to see the path leading toward your destination and you feel tired to continue your journey, even if you find the steps you thought will take you to your desired altitude are difficult to climb and there appears no end of it. Keep my words, if you have burning passion to convert your dreams into reality, if you have discipline to continue your efforts in face of toughest challenge, if you are ready to sacrifice your present for future, than no body can stop you from realizing your dreams, howsoever big they may be. Our history is full of instances when individuals have defeated seemingly impossible challenges
To day India needs children like you, full of strong beliefs, belief that they can transform the fate of this country. Children, you are the future of India. After getting freedom India has achieved significant success in some fields but a lot need to be done in many others, and fate of our country will be decided by your dreams and desires. I am confident that our tomorrow will be better than today because it is always easy to build strong children than to repair Brocken men. And the responsibility of creating strong children , lies to great extent on the parents and schools.
I believe parents and schools need to focus more on developing character and strong belief system among children. Our present education system is highly skewed in favor of achieving academic excellence and it grossly ignores the necessity of developing strong and powerful self esteem and belief system, which can give them the courage to withstand the most abhorring challenges of life. Academic excellence can help to get admission in good collage, it may help to get good job but good belief system will become the foundation on which they can lead a meaning full life. You can verify this fact from history, the majority of people who have changed the face of humanity were not the most brilliant students in academics rather they were the people burning with the desire to accomplish some thing great.
If we want to create a better India we need to correct curriculum of schools and collages
Friends, I close my address with a famous quote of A.P.J. kalam , he says: dreams are not what we see when we sleep rather dream is passion which does not permit us to sleep
Thank you
