China’s Dam on Brahmaputra

China is building a dam on Brahmaputra. Though India discovered it many months ago through satellite images, China was constantly denying it.

Recently, an official from the Chinese ministry has affirmed the fact. But the question is why China was denying the construction of this dam though India was accusing it with all proofs? What was the intention of China?

It’s true that, once the construction of dam is complete, the control on the water of Brahmaputra will be in the hands of China. As the Brahmaputra is the lifeline of North East India, the control on North East India will go to China.

Although China is saying that it is constructing the dam to produce power, some hidden agendas are also associated with it. Ultimately, China will be able to compel India in many situations. The water resources of Brahmaputra will be a strong point to blackmail India. If China blocks the water in Brahmaputra, it will lead to famine in the whole NE region. India needs to take this issue seriously. The attention of international community needs to be attracted. But the problem here is that China does not care for anyone. What can the international community expect from a country that dares to threaten even Barrack Obama. India needs a totally different tactic to tackle China.

Can anyone suggest some solutions?

China’s Dam on Brahmaputra River

Hi,

All governments are looking for ways to help its citizens to develop & grow. Production of energy as well as growing more food to satisfy the demands of an ever expanding population is the dream of all those in power, to ensure their continuance in the seat of power. Natural resources are not bound by geographical and political boundaries. The air we breathe, the water we drink and the land we use for cultivation of food are natural resources. The air movement from country to country knows no boundary at all. It moves freely as man has not yet discovered the technology to regulate its movement, though it is the prime resource to sustain life on this planet. Hence air pollution and its consequences have attracted global attention. Rivers are formed naturally as a result of rainfall in the hilly regions of a country. Construction of a dam across the river will reduce or arrest the flow of water downstream, with reference to the location of the dam. It also prevents free up and down movements of the aquatic species, upsetting their reproduction and growth cycle. It can even cause depletion of a major food resource to the inhabitants of the region. The down stream agricultural land would turn barren due to the dwindling water flow through the region.

The scientists and technologists should devote their undivided attention to discover new ways of mitigating the ill-effects of dam construction across any river. When a commodity is in short supply, the mighty would, naturally, hesitate to share it equitably with the less powerful. At present, China is more powerful and influential in the international arena than India. We Indians cannot afford to ignore this fact. However, it does not prevent us from using our brain power to discover and employ new means to conserve and use all the rainfall within the boundary of our nation. Artificial lakes in the catchment region to retain the flow of water through the river is one thought which comes to my mind. We proud Indians, should not be going around with a begging bowl for the goodwill of others. We shall resolve to exploit our natural resources to the best of our ability. There is no dearth of natural resources with in our country.

Joy Jacob.

True.

But most Indians don't care. The ones in the rural areas don't care about terrorism. The ones in the cities don't care about Naxal menace.

And both the city and the rural cares least for the North East. This is the sad reality of India, a reflection of educational/government policies which failed to nurture the meaning and love for India. All our politicians have done is harp on caste/language and so forth.Do you realize there are tens of millions of Bangladeshi migrants in India some even holding ration cards, voting and so forth. The Congress govt never took action so as to not endanger its vote bank in Assam etc.

And as for the rest of us, we don't care as long at it does not happen in our backyard.

The few who do care are called as nationalists, meaning it is a dangerous and demeaning term.

what if? even after proof our so called parties either keep mum(like communist) or go on object for only name sake and the US will be happy. already saying Aruchanal is part of theirs and the Google shown in the Google earth included some portion with China and nothing was happened or even going to happen in future. whatever command comes from China that will be fulfilled by the so called Indian parties and particularly some traitor\non patriot parties and people will vote for them because they voice for raise in pay and other benefits for not working in the govt offices

@ ahvenkitesh

Yes, Its true. One of my friend served for quite some time in North East, he intimated that most of the states in north east are only in shown in Indian Map. Indian Govt. is spending huge amount of hard earned money of tax payers on para military forces. If 1/20 of the total amount is truly spent on a common man then there would be no need to spend such a big amount on security. So far as Congress Party is concerned, one major quality of this party is to remain in power . Everybody is allowed to do whatever he want to do . Curse Indian culture, follow, western culture, be corrupt as much as you can but don't forget to vote in the favor of congress party. All the problems being faced by this country will ever remain because people will vote to them in a hope getting them solved in future.

Red Flag up for Bangladesh,India

China has started constructing first of the 5 dams on Brahmaputra River.

China plan for diversion of Brahmaputra River, originating from Tibetan plateau, has become a highly disputed International dispute between China and many downstream Nations like India, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. China is planning to construct dams, on Brahmaputra and Other main Rivers originating from China occupied Tibet.Economies of downstream countries and the lives of their citizens are principally dependent on the River flowing in their regions. still, China continues to pay lip service to this issue by issuing denials and arranging diplomatic international seminars.China has never signed any water sharing treaty with any of the Asian downstream country.

About Three years back, media reports appeared for the 1st time, about possible plans of china, to build five dams on the Brahmaputra river in Tibet. As per China practice, the Government issued a statement to deny any such intention. Avid China watchers had then warned the Indian Government that if china Government issuing prompt denials, it must be really considering the plan. Even a few months ago, intention of taking up any such project was flatly denied by the government of China. When this matter raised at the time of Chinese President Hu Jintao's India Visit, Chinese were very quick in rejecting the news as a rumor to quell Indian sentiments. Chinese Minister for Water Resources, Wang Shucheng at that time said that Project was “unfeasible ,unnecessary and unscientific, and had no backing from the government.” The China Daily reported, Wang Shucheng saying that “There is no need for such dramatic and unscientific projects”. Later,Foreign Ministry's spokesman Liu Jianchao said (according to the China Daily) that “The Government of China has no plans to construct a dam on the Yarlung Zangbo River”.

In spite of frequent denials from China , details started leaking out in the press of the china about construction of first such dam on Brahmaputra. With high quality satellite imagery now available to Internet users, it is impossible even for a secretive Chinese government to hide such a project from internet users. When latest images of the first dam construction were published on the internet, Chinese government had to accept this fact. The first dam on the Brahmaputra river is coming up at Zangmu (Tibetan name Dzam) having 92.522996 and 29.141999 as longitude and latitude. One of China’s biggest engineering and construction companies, China Gezhouba (Group) Corp, has been awarded a contract worth 1.14 billion yuan ($167 million) for a hydropower plant here. Gezhouba’s subsidiary, No 5 Engineering Co Ltd, will provide concrete and aggregate processing services for the Zangmu Hydropower project, the company says on its website. The company will be responsible for designing, constructing and running the project that supplies 3.4-million cu m of concrete and 8-million-ton aggregate for the water power station. The project is expected to last until the end of December 2015. Tibet Power Generation Co Ltd of China Huaneng Group, the country’s top power generator, would proved finance for the Zangmu Water Power Station. Zangmu Power station will start producing power in 2013. The electricity goes to Lhasa as a high voltage power line is planned for connecting the Lhasa power grid.

The 2nd Chinese dam on Brahmaputra is now in planning stage. And would come up at Twelve kilometers downstream from Zangmu dam. The location of the power station is five kilometers to the west or upstream of Giacha county seat. The power generating capacity is 320 MW and that dam will maintain a water level of 3244 m above sea level. The reservoir will be filled with 28.87 million cubic meters of water. The expected power generating capacity is 1.527 billion kw/h per year.

Concerns of south Asian and downstream countries on Brahmaputra River, i.e. India , Myanmar and Bangladesh seem to have been addressed at present as both of these would be run of the river projects. This means that Brahmaputra water would not be diverted for the time being. However when all the five dams would be completed eventually, one can not say for sure that water from reservoirs would never be diverted. Such an eventuality would turn out to be a major problem for India but would be a calamity or a disaster for Bangladesh.

During 1950, Chinese Army set out to ‘liberate’ the roof of the world. The Indian Government , having inherited treaties of past signed by the Britishers with Tibet, were not only shocked at Chinese unprovoked Army action in Tibet, but were also offended by how the China government had disregarded its explicit assurances to India that Tibet would be left free. The British and American governments had strongly supported the position of India on Tibet and had offered all possible help to India and Tibet.

Most surprisingly, then PM of India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, suddenly took decision then to wash his hands off Tibet and even dissuaded American government from giving Army help to Tibet. Jawahar offered Tibet to China, on a platter, without any preconditions and failed to extract a price like settling Indo-China Border and a concrete river water sharing agreements.

This is turning out to be the biggest and the blunder of the century, committed by the Indian Government and the Outcome of the same not only would haunt India but also other Asian countries like Myanmar and Bangladesh for many decades to come.

the thing i dont get is that is indian government so incompetent that it cannot make out if our neighbor has constructed dam on the river which flows through india??? americans opposite on the globe to india can sit in their nation and tell whats going on in india and our indian government is still requesting chinese government to reveal its dam project on brahmaputra.. this is ridiculous. i think india government should be more stringent,

these are the issues which are neglected by the indian government since these are related to far east. one thing government needs to realise is that every inch of natural resource residing in india and reaching india is a part and parcel of it and protecting it is our duty. else in no time other nations would acquire our natural assests and we will have it to let it go just because of this lame government.

these are the deliberate acts of china to take away natural resource of what India shares. we should not allow such encroachments on our assets as this only shows our incompetence to protect our national treasure. our government must show some care towards such issues else it would not be a distant issue that india would have encroachments from other nations on its land

One of the leading news paper down played apprehensions that dam has been built by China on brahamputra river will influence the nation, saying that this project isn’t a reason for prompt alarm. It’s a fact that the country China is building a dam on Zangmu in the mid reaches of Brahamputra known in Tibet. Sources have said that this will not affect the nation in any way, said by external affair minister Krishna.

External affairs Minister SM krishna Misleading the People of INDIA

External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna claims that China's Zangmu Dam on the Brahmaputra river is no cause of concern to India as it is a "run off the river" dam.

However, Headlines Today has accessed latest intelligence report that belies the minister's claim. RAW's report clearly states that India has reasons to be alarmed as the dam will severely restrict water flow downstream.

The intelligence report was prepared by the Beijing station of the Research and Analysis Wing. The top secret report was presented to the Cabinet Secretariat on June 13. Yet four days after he was given this report, Krishna blatantly misled the people of India on China's designs for the Brahmaputra. Krishna had said India had no reason to be worried.

The report says, "Beijing is not responding to India's concerns on the Brahmaputra dam. There is an urgent need to take up this issue with China as these dams will 'severely impact' the flow of water into India."

The report says China has no plans to reduce the height of the dam, a demand that India has been making for a long time. This contradicts Krishna's assurance to Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi just four days ago that the dam will not affect water flow to India.

The current height has been fixed at 3,370 feet. According to the intelligence report, at this height the flow of water downstream will be severely affected.

The Zangmu Dam is being built on the eastern side of the Tibetan plateau where the river has a steep drop. The report says this will also affect the Himalayan ecosystem on the Indian side in the long run.

It seems the external affairs minister repeatedly downplayed China's plans to continue with the construction of the Zangmu Dam.

Krishna had assured Gogoi on June 16 that China has heeded to India's requests on the dam. He also claimed that ISRO satellite maps showed no construction, the very same map that the intelligence report is quoting showing construction.

The government, however, continues to be in denial mode. According to government sources, "India has no reason to fear". "Media reports are sensational. They do not adhere to the actual position," the sources added.

What is even more alarming is that in addition to the existing project, China intends to construct four more smaller dams on the tributaries of the Yarlung Tsangpo river between Jiacha and Sangro Provinces. This will have a further impact on the downstream flow of water of Brahmputra into India.

Members of Parliament from Arunachal Pradesh have raised concern about China's dam and its impact on Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and even Bangladesh.

The Ministry of External Affairs sources told Headlines Today, "We will not comment on the veracity of the report. We have not discussed the height or any specifications of a dam with the Chinese. We will not make any comment officially."

National Security Advisory Board's member Dr Alka Acharya told Headlines Today, "There is no need for confusion that certain activities are happening on the river. However, we are still debating the issues. We need to push a mechanism (to sort this out)."

"China will also be in a spot if the South Asia region is going to be affected. Intelligence report is one thing and assessment by experts is another," Acharya added.

While strategic affairs expert Bharat Karnad said, "The Indian government is negligent", former MP and Arunachal CM's advisor Kiren Rijiju said, "We can't look at things in a peaceful manner. The government of India, especially the MEA, is in a complacent mood." It's not about the economy alone, it's about the civilization as well, Rijiju added.

i think the news which we had previously and now do not match. india should boost its intelligence services so as to have information on the activities of china on indian border. and if the surveillance reports are legitimate and impeccable, i think indian government must strongly react to it and take stand to prevent loss of any natural resources like the water from brahmaputra.
