Generic medicines are basically the drugs that contain the same active ingredient as the original formulation but that are produced and distributed among the people without patent protection. Calling the generic medicines "identical" to the original ones is quite legal to interpret, since they are identical in doses, strength, utility and efficacy of the original medicine. In India generic medicines are quite popular and greatly used, but it is also a matter of serious concern that is it right; to fully rely on the generic medicines when it comes to cure the most crucial and dangerous diseases like Cancer, HIV/AIDS and other serious illness? No matter though the medicinal configuration is quite the same to a major extent, but isn't it still like taking the minor risk when it is seriously a point of death and life? Sometimes even the smallest differences might bring big changes that might lead the person to death threatening complications. Because it is about being unsure about the effectiveness of the medicine that we are taking in order to receive the best cure for our illness.
The generic medicines are also cheaper because there is not a rigorous marketing and research expenditure involved in their production and distribution as it is in the case of marketing and research done by the big medical firms for patent medicines. Grabbing patent is itself has been an issue in the Indian scenario. Thus, it is very much required that at least there should be a regular check on the regulation and quality control of generic medicines prevalent in India. And also there should be an increase in the research infrastructure in order to have a strong and improvised Pharmaceutical industry and to look after the diversified need of the patients.
