Guwahati is known as the "Gateway to North-east", is a major city of Assam. Dispur, the capital of Assam is located in Guwahati. It is an upcoming city and features many modern-day Malls, industries as well as educational institutions. The city is situated on the bank of the mighty river Brahmaputra. Guwahati was formerly known as Pragjyotishpur and it got its name as it used to be huge market for beetle nuts. This is an ancient and the thrid largest city in the entire East India and has its reference in the Mahabharata. The city is famous all over the World for tantrisim and the major hub is the "Kamakhaya Temple" which is also a Shakti pith. The city hosts multi-culture as people from various places from India resides here. Assamese is a dominant language of the city.
