How to block annoying SMSes?

Most of the time our phone beeps and messages starts overflowing and these SMSes are mostly of the service providers or from telemarketing groups. This becomes quite annoying for everyone, especially while you are in the middle of some important work or discussion. I have once used the Do Not Disturb service but it only blocks the calls and not the SMSes. Can anyone help me out as to how to block the annoying SMSes?

One of things which you could probably do is block the number in your phone so that both calls and smses can be blocked. Few phones have an option called "block number" which transfers blocked number's smses to a trash folder. I can't think of any other way of avoiding this! Any better solutions?
