After a casual survey of some students from various schools and colleges in and around Delhi NCR, I have found that most of the students do not have a set time table. Besides, a few of them, who do make a time table, soon get board of set hours of working and ultimately abandon it. They say it is so tired to follow a timetable day in day out. Moreover every third day there is some sudden out-of-the-timetable commitment that compels them to break it. So it is better not to have one then to break it so often.
Time Management
Right. Agreed. You sometimes may not know about your engagements tomorrow. Someday suddenly you have a guest during your study time and you can't just ignore him. But then you can always compensate the study time spent with the guest. And it doesn't happen frequently.
Whatever you may say, to utilise your time in the best possible way, it is necessary to make a timetable and follow it to. A time table will not only help you to utilise time constructively but will also establish in all your activities and engagements - including you are studies.
Find out the best time to Study
You may not know about your study time but you do know about your studies. You know what subjects you have to study throughout the session. The nature of every subject is different from the other and hence time-demand of every subject varies. Some subjects need more study time than some other ones. Then time-demand of every subject differs from person to person. If you are good at history, for example, you may devote less time to history than to economics where you are not so good.
Therefore from the day one of your school college, make a time table and follow it religiously. And if you think making a time table is a waste of time, you are mistaken. Some time spent now in making a timetable will save lot of your time later on. And don't be over-enthusiastic in making a timetable. Be moderate and reasonable and flexible in your time table so that you may not have to change it quite often.
Benefits of Making a Timetable
Broadly there are three major advantages of making a time table:
How to make an effective timetable?
Here is the list of points may be kept in mind while making a time table:
But before you begin to plan a timetable, however, you need to know in detail exactly how you do spend your time now. For this purpose you should keep a minute to minute account of your walking activities for one or two working days, or better still for a week.
Do not regard it as a waste of time. Nothing is unimportant if you are compelled to attend to it everyday of your life. When you have kept the record, for some days, you may like to try and classify your walking activities and to add up the time spent on each activity everyday. Then calculate the percentage of your time, spent on each activity. The questions you will naturally ask yourself are:
How to plan a Timetable
In tackling any course of study you should make for yourself (i) a long term plan embracing the year's work, (ii) a weekly time table constructed afresh each week and (iii) a holidays/ festivals timetable.
If you can't chalk out Long Term plan, make at least detailed weekly time table. This time table needs to be made out at the beginning of each week, in keeping with the changing requirement of your courses and in the light of your experience.
To make a realistic and effective timetable needs a certain amount of self knowledge. It is no use making big plans of work that you are never likely to be able to put into effect. Usually you need time table for your set classes and private study time. You can leave your other activities to themselves.
Another equally important point while making a time table is to allot time to every subject/paper daily. However the duration of time may vary according to your efficiency in the subjects. As regards the total amount of study time, it is useful to know roughly how much work most students actually do.
When Is The Best Time To Study?
The average study time is about 40 hours a week. But, within the general framework each student has to determine for himself how much time to spend in private study. But almost certainly your total hours of work should not be less than average. Then some students claim that they can do their best work late at night undistracted, while others sleep. But work done under the midnight oil often fails to stand up to the cold light of the day.
As an occasional technique for completing some important assignment, working in the night may be all very well, but to be fresh and alert in the morning you must have a good night's sleep.
In my view the morning hours are easily the most valuable and, for most students, the best time for serious work. Therefore, it is worth making every effort that your morning hours are not wasted away.
A little forethought before you retire to bed often enables you to make flying start the next day. Since you cannot, at first, be quite sure how much time to allocate to the various subjects of your course, you must make the best guess, you can. If you find some particular subject difficult, allot more time to it than the others. Do not neglect it in favour of another subject which you find easier or more interesting.
Take short breaks while studying
During the session of continuous work on the same subject, rest is also essential. But rest periods should be short - 5 minutes or so. If longer rest periods are taken, momentum will be lost and possibly considerable effort may be required before you become warmed up to the task again. A short break should be taken whenever you feel that you are slowing down and making errors. A change in activity or posture during the rest is desirable, such as walking around the room, stretching your arms etc.
It is useful practice to keep a diary or journal. This is best done in pocket diaries keeping a daily record will only take 5 or 10 minutes maximum a day. But in summing up each day's activities, you have permanent record of your plans in action.

Broadly there are three major advantages of making a time table:
- A time table brings discipline not only in your studies but also in your life. And discipline we must have.
- A time table save your time and effort. Without a time table you are likely to spend much time in making up your mind - when to study and what to study, and getting together the necessary books and material, and in getting into the right mood to study. If you have time table you know when and what subject to study. Therefore that mood is automatically and psychologically set.
- A time table is the most proper and delightful use of time. If you do not have set hours on yourself, you are more likely to spend the time, when you should be studying, in watching TV, listening to music, or conversing idly. Therefore do make a time table right now.

Here is the list of points may be kept in mind while making a time table:
- Your family environment.
- Distance of school/ college from your place.
- Your personal preferance - early riser/late riser.
- Your school or college timings.
- Your family or other social engagements.
- Your hobbies.

- Does the overall distribution of time correspond to my needs and purposes?
- Is enough time spend on study?
- Is any particular action taking too much time?
- Do I waste too much time and when and how does this occur?
