From this statement, one can imagine the role and importance of Indian Institute of Technologies in shaping the great minds of India. According to the survey of The Times Higher Education Supplement, IITs are at the 57th position in world's top 200 universities and 33rd in top global science institutes. Most of Modern India’s intellectual who’s who had their education from IITs. Some of the prominent alumni are N.R. Narayana Murthy, Rajendra S. Pawar, Mani Lal Bhaumik(inventor of LASIK eye surgery), Arun Sarin, Vinod Khosla, Arogyaswami Paulraj and Manohar Parrikar.
Recommendation of a 22-member committee chaired by Nalini Ranjan Sarkar to Sir Jogendra Singh in the direction of creating technical institutes in India for the reconstruction of war devasted economy was the founding stone behind the establishment of IITs. The first IIT was established in Kharagpur in the year 1950. Consequently, according to the recommendations of Sarkar committee four more IITs were established at Mumbai, Chennai, Kanpur and Delhi. Giving respect to Assam Accord, Rajiv Gandhi promised an IIT in Assam which started its operation in 1994. Now total number of IITs in India is 15. all of them are autonomous institutes and Institutes of National Importance as per the declaration of Indian parliament.
IITs offer undergraduate, graduate and research studies in different branches of science and technology. Total number of undergraduate students perusing their courses in different IITs is around 15,500 while the same number for graduate courses is 12,000. For undergraduate studies, a student has to qualify a Joint Entrance examination. To take admission in graduate courses, the applicants have to clear the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering.
