Live-in Relationships

The Supreme Court in 2015 recognized live-in relationships and observed it as an acceptable norm in modern times. But even legislation cannot change the attitude of a public which has been holding the concept in a low modus. Live-in relationships are very much a taboo even in the urban areas. Adults who are willing to embrace such relationships mostly lie about their marital status to landlords and neighbors in order to escape public disgrace. Many of us talk in favour of the same but we become no less than gossip-mongers when our own friends take such a step. It is a shame that we are more interested to know what’s going on in someone else’s bedroom rather than focusing on our lives. And pathetically, slut-shaming men and women for their choices appears acceptable to most.

As other friend of mine has very rightly said, live-in relationship has successfully gained its authenticity in the legal terms but failed to do so in the social terms. Society is developed with respect to finance, luxury, standard of living, but could not raise itself mentally. The concept of the “live-in relationships” leaves an individual with frowning on his forehead and atrocious thoughts about the individuals (maintaining it). Although people talk about being open minded, they don’t act so. Such negativity has indirectly pushed the present generation more secluded from their previous one. The benefits of such concept are deemed under the demerits of it; by the society. The evolving society needs to grasp the pace and vicinity of development.

India is becoming more open to western culture and lifestyle. One of such adopted western lifestyle concepts is live-in relationship. Live-in is a relationship in which, a man lives with a woman ( female partner) without marriage. They live together like a married couple to test thier compatibility before committing to each other or sometimes they don't want to marry at all. According to me one should decide to live together only if they see future with their partner, just trying it out once isn’t the right thinking to go in a relationship. Such relationships are against Indian culture.
