Majuli is the world's larget river island in the Brahmaputra river of Assam. It is formed due to the changes in the course of the river Brahmaputra and its tributaries, especially Louhit. It is about 200kms away from Guwahati, the largest city of Assam. Ferries are available from Nimati Ghat in Jorhat is the only means of transportation to reach the island. The inhabitants of this island are missing tribe of Assam. The language spoken here are both Assamese and Missing. It is the domicile of Assamese neo-vaishanva culture. It is the hub of Assamese culture and embraces the civilization for the last 500 years. The people of this island follows the vaishnava religion preached by Shankardeva. Shatriya Dance, bargeet and other assamese folk and classical music forms can be found and learnt here. Due to errosion by the river, the area of the island is reduced yet it still continues to be the World's largest river island.

Majuli is not only an asset for Assam but also for India as it is the World's largest river Island. But sadly enough, the area of the river island is getting reduced day by day due to erosion by the mighty river Brahmaputra. The island is known as the cultural hub of Assam as the old Assamese culture and traditions are still to be found there.

Majuli is the largest river island in the World and is well-known for its Vaishnava culture that was preached by Sankardeva. The island itself has a rich culture and this makes it a major attraction of tourists in Assam. The island has been listed as World Heritage by UNESCO but has not yet been recognized. The island of Majuli depicts the rich Assamese culture which includes both the Vaishnava culture as well as the Ahom culture and this makes this place unique from other parts of the state.
